Compost Builder
Calculate the optimal C:N ratio for fungal-dominated compost using your locally available waste streams.
Select your compost target, set your heap dimensions, and enter the volumes of feedstocks available. The calculator gives you real-time feedback on your C:N ratio and suggests adjustments to hit your target.

Add Feedstocks by Priority
Add your cheapest or most available feedstock first, then the next, and so on. The auto-calculator will prioritise using them in this order.

It depends what you are growing. The calculator offers three targets: bacterial at 15–20:1 for annual crops and vegetables with fast nutrient cycling, balanced at 20–25:1 for mixed systems and transitional orchards, and fungal at 25–30:1 for orchards, perennials and forest systems. An established orchard wants the fungal target.
Perennial systems run on fungal-dominant soil biology, and compost is one of the most direct ways to feed it. A higher carbon-to-nitrogen ratio favours fungi over bacteria as the heap matures, so what you eventually spread carries the biology an orchard actually wants rather than the biology suited to an annual cropping system.
Add your cheapest or most available material first, then the next, and so on — the auto-calculator works down the list in that priority order, so the order you enter them in matters. For each material you give the volume available in cubic metres. The tool carries a C:N ratio for each feedstock, which you can override if you know your own material differs.
Once the mix is set, the calculator suggests what to add to bring the heap toward your chosen target where the feedstocks on their own do not reach it. You can also cap the total to your heap volume, which is worked out from the length, width and height you enter, so the recipe fits a heap you can actually build.
